Discipline of Remembering

This spiritual discipline is so often overlooked but of great importance in our lives.

Deut 4:9,10

“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children's children— how on the day that you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, the LORD said to me, Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.’”

Moses addresses the people about how to keep their hearts before the Lord. He shares with the people of Israel some key principles about how to do this that are equally important to us today. And the key is this:

Do not forget what the Lord has done.

This sounds simple I know but there are so many times that we do just that, we forget. We may not completely forget, on occasions it may be that we forget His faithfulness, it may be that we forget He’s the healer, He’s our provider. As we develop history with God over years, make a discipline of recording or journaling testimonies of Him moving in your life. Let these testimonies become part of the platform in your life for your next breakthrough.

I remember the first year of marriage Jacqui and I didn’t receive a salary but were supported by partners as we have been our whole ministry career. I remember a day, we had been married for about 6 months, when Jacqui was struggling because she didn’t have a mirror to do her hair and it was a real burden to me as her husband. One afternoon I got a call from a youth I had disciples saying he wanted to pop round to our house. He arrived that day with a belated wedding gift - a full size mirror! It’s testimonies like that that are an encouragement to me as we continually face financial challenges with our transition back to South Africa. But I need to be reminded of His faithfulness, and as the scripture says, my kids need to hear the stories. What are your stories? Are you recording them and reminding yourself?
